Review: These were the topics at the Information Day 2017

This year we were once again able to welcome around 100 participants to our Information Day in Bensheim.

Many thanks to all participants at this year’s PBS Info Day! Regardless of whether presenter, customer, partner, or prospect, you all contributed considerably to the success of the event.

In the series of presentations, we discussed the challenges involved in a migration to SAP S/4HANA in conjunction with the PBS solutions, and showed which fundamental steps are required in order to successfully prepare this. With our new solution QA4ERP we showed how cost-efficient, agile analyses can be created directly from your ERP data, and how these can help you to make even better operational or strategic decisions.

Keynote: Information Lifecycle Management and Operational Analytics

Prof. Dr. Detlev Steinbinder began his keynote with an overview of the PBS product portfolio and showed what support PBS can offer its customers in the ERP and BW environment. Prof. Dr. Steinbinder went on to explain SAP’s strategy and showed how the PBS solutions are aligned to S/4HANA and BW/4HANA. Afterwards Prof. Dr. Steinbinder went through the new features of the individual product lines (for ex. Hadoop support by PBS ContentLink or management of stragglers in the BW environment with PBS CBW).

Prof. Dr. Steinbinder presented an interesting product within the scope of new developments:
This involved standard software for the data management and analysis of SAP ERP and non-SAP data. The new, inexpensive solution includes analysis templates for reporting, planning, and forecasting that can be adapted quickly and flexibly to meet individual requirements. What is particularly interesting, is that the analysis results can be called up via different devices. Because product OA4ERP is a joint development of LISTEC GmbH, RSM Consult GmbH and PBS Software GmbH, Mr. Joachim Pajonk von from RSM Consult GmbH presented the functions of OA4ERP in an impressive live demo.

The PBS archive add ons and the Migration to S/4HANA

In his presentation, Mr. Walter Steffen first described the different options for migrating to S/4HANA and how the PBS products can support this migration process. Mr. Steffen provided practical examples based on two pilot projects and the experiences he had gained there. Afterwards, Mr. Steffen competently differentiated between data archiving and data aging. The closing topic also attracted great attention: the new EU General Data Protection Regulation and the data management requirements resulting from it.

Effective Data Access and compliant Storage with PBS Solutions

Together Mr. Oliver Schweim (bonprix Handelsgesellschaft mbH) and Mr. Christof Cölsch (nexQuent Savento GmbH) presented the integration of archive solutions within a complex SAP project in the guest lecture. The underlying conditions for the creation and acceptance of a sound archiving concept were highlighted.
Which parameters have to be taken into consideration and how can these parameters be implemented successfully with the help of the PBS solution ContentLink? The advantages of transparent data access using PBS ContentLink were illustrated convincingly.

PBS ContentLink – Compliant SAP Data Archiving

Mr. Gernot Reichling started his presentation with a current overview of the PBS solution ContentLink, the interface to numerous compliant storage systems. In addition to the list of possible storage media and use of the Amazon S3 REST interface, the focus was on the Hadoop connection in particular. Mr. Reichling explained the Apache Hadoop Framework and showed a Hadoop connection live.

The next focus in the presentation was the demonstration of the new platform-independent Java installer. It enables the fast, guided, and validated installation of the PBS solution. The update of existing PCL instances is possible as well as the creation of templates for creating further instances. To conclude, Mr. Reichling referred to highlights of PBS ContentLink: retention management for documents and ADK, the support of high availability concepts, software-based replication, the interaction of signature providers, and the encryption of stored data.

Decommissioning of SAP Applications with PBS Enterprise Content Store

To start with, Mr. Oliver Hölzel defined under which conditions a system decommissioning should be taken into consideration and which requirements in particular should be taken into consideration when doing so.

Mr. Hölzel performed a live demo of the comprehensive functions of PBS Enterprise Content Store (ECS) starting with the import of SAP data, the display of this data in table format and the navigation in ECS, through to the display of individual documents, and finally to the creation of individual views.

Afterwards, Mr. Hölzel presented a decommissioning project performed with PBS ECS, whereby the main focus was set on the handling of HR data. Here, the new views such as the “wage type reporter” are highly interesting. What was impressive, was that this complex decommissioning project, supported by PBS, was implemented in only 10 days.

News about Nearline Storage in BW

As a guest speaker from SAP, Mr. Roland Kramer presented the newest developments in the area of Data Tiering Optimization (DTO). He explained how the classification of the data in “Hot”, “Warm”, and “Cold” looks from SAP’s perspective and what effect this has on the storage location of the data – HANA or Hadoop – and as a result, on the data volumes and the performance. When doing this, he also highlighted the path from BW on HANA to BW/4HANA and related new innovations.
A further focus of his presentation was the innovations for release 16.1 of the SAP IQ nearline database. To conclude, Mr. Kramer explained how in a customer project archived data could be transferred into SAP NLS with little effort through the combination of SAP standard and PBS CBW archived data.

PBS Nearline Solution for SAP BW

Mr. Dr. Christoph Bedau spoke about the PBS solution CBW NLS. Dr. Bedau presented the basic concept of increasing performance through optimized data access.

Dr. Bedau then went on to talk about the additional functionality of CBW NLS such as optimization of query runtimes through snapshots, or straggler management. The next point was a tool that is already included in CBW NLS: the PBS Data Transfer Cockpit. Dr. Bedau explained what the process of a data transfer from an existing NLS connection, via which archiving was previously performed, into a new NLS connection can look like with the Data Transfer Cockpit.

To conclude, Dr. Bedau showed the solution for straggler management that is integrated in CBW NLS, that fixes the problem of time slice locks in the case of a direct posting of stragglers.
