Seamless Integration of POS Data in the SAP Infrastructure

Big data is nothing new within the retail industry. Every single day, huge volumes of cash receipts data are created that require fast and efficient processing from a materials management perspective in addition to be being handled in a compliant manner. Both internal validation processes and fiscal requirements place stringent requirements on the provision of this data over long periods of time and in the greatest degree of granularity.

The SAP infrastructure provides a comprehensive Information Lifecycle Management concept for their own data structures. In addition to the compliant retention of unstructured and structured data on fixed content media and retention management that is related to this, the classical data warehouse approach is available for analyses on the one hand and, on the other, the attractive SAP HANA technique for extremely fast database analyses. It would also be interesting to use this potential in order to keep POS data under control. However, it should be taken into consideration that a data record volume in the billions needs to be handled, which could result in a really complex project from a technical and financial perspective.

PBS has chosen an astonishingly simple approach with NAI - External Data Services. A solution, that can now also store data from third-party applications compressed to a high degree and perform extremely fast analyses, was developed on the basis of many years’ experience of the use of column-based database technology in SAP BW and ERP systems for the management of archived application data. The non-SAP data is archived in a compliant manner in its original format in Fixed Content Storage. The portion of the data that should be used for validation of the complete set of data or for general analyses is copied directly into the PBS nearline database. It is not necessary to save the data content in SAP. Data access is performed via transactions, reports and/or queries via the PBS nearline interface. All advantages of the analytics server are used for aggregation, summation, and filtering. A link to the stored original file is kept.

Data Mapping

The structure definition of the transfer objects is performed using the workbench of the External Data Services. This is where the mapping between the import structures of the original files and the target structures of the analytic server takes place. The linkage is rule-based. For example, fields can be linked to one another via direct assignment, via a native SQL function, but also via an ABAP function. With its integrated versioning concept the solution will accommodate the future development of the data structures.

Automated Data Transfer

POS data is created almost continuously in enterprises with a global network of subsidiaries. This makes a timely, cyclical transfer of the data necessary in order to be able to make ad-hoc decisions on its basis and, on the other hand, to enable daily evaluations in realtime. The PBS EDS Suite comprises a scalable transfer component that transfers the data in a rolling process into the target structures.

Integrated Top-Down Access

Data access is performed based on queries in the SAP system. A powerful query designer is integrated in the PBS EDS Suite. The data can be seamlessly displayed from the aggregated data view right through to the original POS transaction via the familiar drill-down functions of the SAP system. Data access is enhanced by a program API that enables a customer-specific linkage to the standard processes of the SAP system.

  • PBS External Data Services enable the integration of external data in the SAP Information Lifecycle Management.
  • A high-performance transfer process ensures fast copying and efficient preparation of the original data.
  • Original files are transferred to compliant storage, information that is relevant for analytical evaluations and validation processes is transferred into the PBS nearline storage.
  • Linkages are guaranteed between the analysis data of the PBS nearline storage and the original data from the storage system.
  • Extremely fast data accesses and analyses are possible using ad-hoc queries. A program API is available for customer-specific purposes.
  • PBS External Data Services are part of the PBS Nearline Analytic Infrastructure.
